Double glazing your windows or doors is a great way to save energy and minimise noise. But there are some things that you need to know to ensure that your double glazing is as effective as possible. We’ve pulled together all the information that you need.

What are Double Glazed Windows?
Double glazed windows are windows that have two glass panels in the same frame, separated by a small space that is filled with either air or a nontoxic gas such as argon.  The two glass panels should be separated by a space that is twenty millimetres for maximum efficiency.

Benefits of Double Glazed Windows
There are several benefits to using double glazed windows in your home. Perhaps the most significant is the insulation properties. Double glazed reduce the loss of heat from the home in the winter and the innermost panel of the glass is closer to room temperature. This means that anyone sitting near a window will feel much more comfortable. Also, if you have a convection heating system in your home, double glazing is important as it will prevent heat loss from the uppermost areas of the house. In summer, double glazing will stop heat from entering the home, as it helps to reduce the amount of radiated heat gain. Generally, the insulation properties of double glazing are so great that you may save a significant amount on your heating or cooling bills.
Double glazed windows and doors are also great for reducing the amount of ambient noise that enters your home. This is great if you live on a busy street, near the toll road, under a flight path, or generally just want more peace and quiet in your home.
If you are replacing your old windows and are worried that you may not be able to get double glazed windows to match your old windows, don’t be. There is a huge range of double glazed windows and almost any style or type of window should be available. Double glazed windows are also available in many different types of glass and they are safer than the traditional glass windows should they break. Finally, double glazed windows are more secure than traditional windows.

What to look out for with Double Glazed Windows
One potential drawback for installing double glazed windows in your home is their initial cost. They are more expensive than traditional windows but you will recoup the extra cost in reduced energy bills. Be aware also that energy costs (such as electricity charges) are rising meaning that you will pay more for heating and cooling. To get the most out of your double glazing, you will need to plan summer shading, especially for windows that face north. Ensure that the shading is at the right angle to catch low-angled winter sunlight for free heating. To get the full benefits out of your double glazing, it must be a part of the total insulation for all of the exterior surfaces of your home. Look for a supplier that will give you detailed advice.
As far as window frames go, aluminium frames are the most complex to manufacture as they need “thermal breaks” to prevent heat transfer. They also take a lot more energy to produce than timber. Timber frames are thermally efficient but they will require more maintenance than other window types as they age. The most thermally efficient window frames are uPVC, which are now standard in Europe. These uPVC frames never need painting.

Buyers Tips for Replacement Windows and Double Glazing
  • Replacing windows on your property can change the visual appearance of your home considerably. Choose a style that matches your property and enhances its looks.
  • Make sure you have an adequate numbers of opening windows.
  • Always ask your supplier how long the delivery and installation will be and have this stipulated on your contract.
  • With PVCu windows ask your supplier if the windows are fully welded or if parts of the window (transoms/midrails) are mechanically fixed. Mechanical fixing is generally a “cheaper” way of manufacturing.
  • Don’t accept the first price you are quoted. Get at least two — three estimates if you have the time. Research all of the alternatives in terms of product and style.
  • Check out the Guarantee and what it covers. Most guarantees will give a 10-year cover on the frames but you may find that the cover for the double glazed unit is 5 years.
  • Always enquire about the type of locks and security features being fitted. Most modern double-glazed replacement windows feature multi-point espagnolette type locking, which will also “lock” partially open in a “night-vent” position.
  • Rarely will the “cheapest” price be the best for you in the long run. When comparing “like with like” please also take into comparison how long the company has been established and the “quality” of their guarantees.
  • Do not be the Customer from HELL. To get the best out of any Replacement Window Supplier or Builder maintain a friendly but professional rapport. Do not assume that they will always be trying to get “one over” on you. Their advice may be in your best interests.
