Speak to anyone! Everyone knows someone who has been a victim of crime over the last six months. Even in the current economical climate people still want “the best” and the lowest of our species will do anything to get it. In recent times we have heard of burglaries taking place where the victims have been gassed to give the intruder as much time as they like to search through properties and get exactly what they want.
So what can we do as property owners to protect our families and property?
Look at your property and imagine you have locked the keys inside. Where do you think you may be able to gain access? This is generally the place that a burglar will start. Are all windows shut and locked? Is your shed locked and ladders secure? Does the foliage in your garden provide a good hiding place for an intruder? Are your doors locks flush with the doors? Where do you keep your keys, handbag and other valuables at night? These are some simple things that can be rectified quickly and at next to no cost, making it harder for an intruder to break into your property and steal your belongings.
By spending just a little more you could add motion detection lighting to the outside of your property, which can be bought at any reputable hardware store. You may wish to add additional door locks. Even if you don’t have a dog put up a beware of the dog sign and perhaps invest in the sound of a dog barking when your doorbell rings. Why not set up a neighbourhood watch scheme if everyone in the area is a little more vigilant the chances are you will pick up that car sat outside that looks out of place or the group of people hanging around where they shouldn’t be.
More and more people are installing intruder alarms, CCTV and security smoke in their properties giving even more protection from the intruder. When dealing with security companies first find out how long they have been in the business. Just because they can sell you an alarm does not mean that is necessarily the right one for you and your property. A good security company will listen to your needs and then tailor the system to your specification and budget. They will explain how each system works and the positives and negatives to each product ensuring that you can make an informed decision on the security level you wish to go to.
In these trying times, above all, communities should pull together to oust the burglar. Talk to your neighbours and be vigilant, next time you may spot the burglar before you hear the dreaded news that your neighbour and Mrs Smith down the road had a break in the night before. The more you work together the more likely it is that they will move onto the next.
