Aquapool Spas
If your first soak was in a converted wine cask back in the ‘70s (with a pump and heater system the size of a nuclear reactor), you’ll be relieved to learn that the technology has evolved considerably.
Digital Controls
These allow bathers to change water temperature from inside or outside the hot tub, as well as fine tune the water and air pressure of the jets.
Bells and Whistles
Cup holders and floating candles were once considered opulent. Now, you’re only limited in amenities by your imagination and budget. Today’s tubs can be tricked out with pop-up plasma TVs, built-in stereos, fancy lighting, waterfalls, misters, aromatherapy units, even internet access.
Mechanical Equipment
Ten years ago, ultraviolet lamps were the height of water sanitation and purification. Today, the better technology is Corona Discharge (CD) ozone generators or “ozonators.” These units purify water better and last longer than UV lamps. Even with an ozonator, you’ll still need a sanitizer. Bromine chlorine are old standbys, because they’re inexpensive and they work. Another option is a natural mineral dispenser. It can assist. but not entirely replace, other sanitisers.
Shell Surface
Today the shell, or the surface, of the hot tub is most often textured acrylic, which is easy to clean and maintain (rather than yesteryear’s glossy fibreglass). Other options: custom tile or concrete, wooden, aluminium and vinyl.
Tub Enclosure
The tongue-and-groove redwood skirting around old-school tubs required staining every two years. Today’s cabinets are usually made from weather-resistant polymers, which eliminate that maintenance. The cabinets also house all the mechanical systems. making the units self-contained and portable.
Hydrotherapy
Water jets are key to your hot tub experience. The options for how water pulses. massages and flows over your weary muscles are plenty. The options: swirling jets spin water inside and target specific areas of the body; neck jets push water over your shoulders; whirlpool jets swirl all the water in the tub in a circular motion; and foot massagers are positioned at the well of the tub or at the end of a lounge seat.
